City College’s softball season started Feb. 11, and head coach Tim Kiernan says he has high hopes and goals for the team, which currently has two wins, three losses and one tied game in its preseason.
The team’s strengths are pitching, putting the ball in play and good defense, Kiernan says, adding that the team has been preparing for the season by conditioning and pitching.
The team’s only weakness this season is its size, he says.
“We don’t have a large team; it’s a small team…because we didn’t have enough time to do a lot of recruiting,” says Kiernan.
Kiernan says the team has built a strong chemistry.
“It’s a good team, and they get along pretty well,” says Kiernan.
Two returning players who can help lead the team to its success, Kiernan says, are right fielder, Cassandra Towne and pitcher Shasta Hill Towne, who has been playing at City College for two years. She says she tries to guide the rest of her teammates through action, not words.

“I think I am a quiet leader; I lead by example,” says Towne.
As a right fielder, Towne adds, her position is different, but she enjoys it.
“I really like this team this year,” says Towne. “We click really easily to begin with, and hopefully, we make it to playoffs.”
As a veteran pitcher, Hill says she thinks of herself as the parental figure.
“I’m kind of like the mom of the team,” says Hill. “I like taking care of my players, and I like to back them up. It’s kind of like a family thing.”
Hill says she expects the team to do well this season.
“We’re going to come together, and I think we’re going to shock a lot of people.”
