The topic of abortion has always been a controversial subject among people who identify themselves as either pro-life, or pro-choice. On Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, this subject was addressed as the organization, A Right to Life, visited City College to discuss the moral reasons behind this procedure.

As students carried out their daily routine on campus, volunteers for anti-abortion group handed them brochures in the quad as they passed. But what drew them in the most, were two large posters depicting graphic images of aborted fetuses. Students from both ends of the spectrum stopped to give their take on what is ‘right’ and what is ‘wrong.’

“You can’t take rights from a self-aware and intelligent person and give them to something that doesn’t even conflict self-awareness yet,” said City College student Orpheas Papathe Nasiou. “This is what this debate is about: a baby — a fetus — when it’s born, yes, it’s a human being, yes, it’s a person, but before it’s born, it doesn’t have an idea of self, and taking away rights of women who are intelligent, self-aware, and definitely people when they get pregnant, and give them to something that doesn’t have any of those things. So that’s why I’m pro-choice.”

Leticia Aguliar, student and mother of three children, is pro-life and states that abortion has never been an option for her. She also believes the choice to abort should also be made illegal.

“I think it’s murder,” she said. “Taking human beings out of a mother’s womb while they’re developing is unnatural. I think the whole controversy that’s going on with Planned Parenthood is also unjust.”

William Wilberforce, one of the leaders in A Right to Live, states that one of the organization’s main goals is to bring awareness to the negative aspects of abortion, and raise awareness to the recent unlawful claims facing the nonprofit health organization Planned Parenthood, the largest provider of reproductive health services in the U.S. In addition, they want to work toward ending all national funding given to Planned Parenthood.

“We recognize abortion as an act of violence that kills human beings,” said Wilberforce. “The Supreme Court made a horrible decision that was not based on logic and reason, and they made an emotional decision to allow the act of violence against preborn children. So we’re trying to change the culture and get them to recognize that, and eventually overrule Roe v. Wade”

City College student Amana Johnson believes that the issue is a personal choice, and to remove that option is taking away people’s rights with what they want to do with their own bodies.

“Some places need to limit certain months where you can not get it done,” said Johnson. “There’s some instances where there’s health issues, so if it’s involving rape or health, then you should do it.”

Since Roe’s case, women have the choice to either carry out their pregnancy full term, or terminate it before the second trimester. One of the largest healthcare facilities in the nation to assist women with this emotional decision is Planned Parenthood.

According to the nonprofit company, its locations conduct roughly 300,000 abortions annually, amounting to only 3 percent of the services offered at their clinics. 97 percent are focused toward screenings for breast and cervical cancer, HIV testing and contraception.

Over the years, Planned Parenthood has received support, while also invoking controversy and protests as well. Recent videos leaked to media outlets by the pro-life group, Center for Medical Progress, have exposed Planned Parenthood illegally selling fetal tissue from abortion clinics for research purposes without patient consent. Planned Parenthood denies this claim, yet several states have already begun defunding the company’s abortion services.

“Any time you take away services, there’s always going to be repercussions,” said City College nurse Jeff Christian. “Everybody has their own opinion on where they stand on this whole issue. ‘When does life happen?’ If people think that’s the right choice for them, then I think that’s a shame that you remove that choice. Any time you take away any kind of health service it’s not a good thing, because there’s a big demand.”
