Sacramento is a gem for art enthusiasts, with more than 30 galleries and year-round art events. An important part of that art scene, Second Saturday is a monthly public art walk that stretches from Midtown to Del Paso Boulevard. In the warmer months, street vendors with handmade crafts open up along the MARRS (Midtown Arts Retail Restaurant Scene) block on 20th between J and K streets in Midtown, often accompanied by live entertainment. People interested in the arts, especially college-aged students from across the city, populate the scene. Galleries all over downtown are open from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. and often feature new works by local artists.

One of those artists, Sarah Marie Hawkins, is a talented photographer and artist. She runs a non-profit organization for pop-up art shows called Menagerie. Together with Outlet Coworking, she hosted her first event in which all the featured works were hers. Under the title “Two-Thousand, Five-Hundred Minutes”, an allusion to the Broadway play “Rent”, she displayed 50 art pieces all created in 50 minutes or less and priced at a reasonable $1 per minute. Hawkins takes a moment to talk about how she got involved in the art community.
