Panthers outlast Pirates

The City College baseball team beat the Modesto Junior College Pirates on April 14, winning with the final score of 4-3.

The first three innings left the Panthers scoreless as the Pirates moved ahead 3-0. The bottom of the fifth inning, City College catcher Joe Seto hit a ball down the third base line for a double, sending the runner on first to third.

The next batter for City College was right fielder Julian Jones. His pop fly to deep center field brought Hastings to home plate for the first Panthers score.

Shortstop Jorge Vina’s line drive hit over the infielders’ heads in the following City College at bat brought Seto in from third base, bringing the score to 3-2 in favor of the Pirates.

The bottom of the ninth was the time that City College tied the game after three walks left the bases loaded. Panthers third baseman Ryan Pudwell was the fourth straight walk to tie the score 3-3.

Jorge Vina’s hit in the bottom of the 10th inning was the only hit for City College, but three walks later was the final play of the game. City College first baseman Patrick Armstrong was hit by a high pitch with a full count, bringing in the runner on third make the final score 4-3 in favor of the Panthers.

“It was a good game,” City College outfielder Kashka Dudley said. “My teammates pulled together as a team after we were down a couple (runs), this is the reason we won.”
