Last season the City College women’s soccer team finished with two wins, 17 losses and two tied games. This season, with one returning player and 16 new freshmen, the team said they plan to turn that record around.
The team began their season with the Sea Breeze tournament in Oxnard. City College lost their first game Saturday Aug. 25, 4-1 and tied in their second game Sunday Aug. 26, 2-2.
Despite beginning the season with a loss and a tie, head soccer coach Jang-Ha Oh said he was impressed with the turn around from the first to the second game.
“We adjusted a little our formations and positions, they pulled it together and played much better in the second game,” Oh said.
Outside midfielder, Carmina Gutierrez, animal biology major, said she also agreed as well with coach Oh that the team played much better the second game than the first.

“I definitely feel more connected to this year’s players although we are still adjust[ing] to each other’s style and manner of play,” Gutierrez said.
Oh said he hopes the team will increase ball movement, ball possession, and scoring techniques this season during practice.
Oh explained how this season the team is more talented than the year before. He said the team has better techniques. Oh also said the team seems to be bonding well and fast.
Center midfielder, Isabella Becerra, sports therapy and criminal justice major, and Gutierrez both said they agree that the team needs to improve on their communication and stamina as a team.
So far this season some team members have suffered from minor knee and ankle injuries but said they plan to make a full recovery before the regular season starts. Gutierrez fractured her ankle and damaged her ligament during the middle of summer conditioning.
Both Oh and the captains Becerra and Gutierrez said they are working on improving techniques and said they plan to make the playoffs Nov.19.
