City College will be opening two time capsules buried by past students for the 100-year anniversary celebration and open house.

The first of the capsules opened Oct. 7 was buried in 1993 by the Childhood Development Center, according to Lisa Garcia, supervisor for the center. The capsule was located in front of the Art Court Theatre and opened at 10 a.m.

The second capsule, buried in 1991 during City College’s 75th anniversary, will be opened Oct. 15 during the open house at 2:30 p.m., according to Rick Brewer, City College’s public information officer.

“We will unveil the contents on Oct. 15 and see what our friends and colleagues have put in there 25 years ago,” Brewer said.

City College has been making time capsules since 1927. The walkway between Rodda Hall north and south holds the time capsules from 1927-2014.

Jack Halligan, former City College librarian, said the capsules have copper plates engraved with the year they were buried. Each class year has an engraved copper plate, except the years during World War II.

“During the war years, copper was vital to the armed forces,” Halligan said. “It was decided to use cement for the years ’42, ’43, ’44, and ’45 in order to honor the memory of the students in those classes.”

Ann Love, City College’s public services assistant, has been collecting items to go into the time capsule for 2016. She begins collecting items for the time capsules in July of each year.

“On July 1 of each year, I start a new envelope of items to take to Operations for the time capsule,” Love said. ”Other Items that go in the capsule include local and national news events and signatures from the graduating class.”

A few items have been collected for this year’s capsule.

“So far, the items for the 2016 capsule include an Express newspaper, a save-the-date for the Open House on Oct. 15, and art show postcards,” Love said.
