Just five years ago, she says was addicted to methamphetamine, had lost her boyfriend, and had her child taken into protective custody.

As of today, she’s earned three associate degrees and a certificate in social work, supports herself and her son, and as of Aug. 26, she’ll celebrate five years clean.

The woman is Juanita Kirkendoll.

Kirkendoll has been a fixture at the reception desk on the first floor of the Learning Resource Center for 2 1/2 years and is a wealth of knowledge about the campus, the curricula and the professors.

After her hours staffing the reception desk, Kirkendoll has become very passionate about what she believes is proper library behavior and is eager to assist students who need information about resources in the LRC.

A coworker echoes the observation.

“Juanita has always been generous and has a good heart,” says Bryan Ryan, a physical therapy major who also works at the LRC reception desk.

“You may not like them, but rules help you in the long run,” says Kirkendoll, as she sees a fellow student enter the LRC and reminds him to put his soda in his backpack.

Kirkendoll knows about rules.

Kirkendoll, who lives in Midtown with her son and admits to just turning 40, entered City College in fall 2005 after six months in a program for recovering addicts. She says that rather than opting out of the recovery program by going to work, she was the first to petition for and get special permission to attend college.

Kirkendoll chose City College because the location is convenient. She also likes the college’s diversity and sense of community.

“I like the closer-knit environment,” she says.

Kirkendoll graduated in May 2008 with a 3.4 GPA. After finishing a few more classes at City College, Kirkendoll says she wants to work with adult addicts within an organization that’s designed to help substance abusers, such as Child Protective Services.

Asked what advice she has for students, Kirkendoll says: “Always try to make things into a positive. If I can do it, you can do it.”
