Located on the first floor of the newly renovated North Gym is City College’s brand-new Life Fitness Center. Here, students will find the latest workout equipment and a knowledgeable staff of instructors eager to help.

“You can tell the equipment is all state-of-the-art,” said Anna Joy, a City College English instructor, as she bowed into her morning stretch. “Another big plus is that you get help, so you’re not on your own.”

Once enrolled in an LFC course, students can exercise in three specialized areas of the gym: cardiovascular, strength training and aerobic super-circuit.

The cardiovascular area features recumbent and stationary bikes, treadmills and elliptical trainers.

The strength training area features plate-loaded and specialized equipment, power racks, dumbbells and a large selection of free weights. The aerobic super-circuit combines specialized weight-training equipment and stationary bikes for a full-body workout.

“There’s a lot of equipment diversity,” said Ray Cardoza, a City College student. “There is no waiting for equipment here.”

To take advantage of the LFC, students must first enroll in one of three courses: Fitness 371, Fitness 380 or Fitness 381.

Fitness 371 (Life Fitness Program) is a flexible, self-paced, open-entry/open-exit course that requires students to complete an orientation program before they begin.

Fitness 380 and 381 are traditional weight-training courses. Unlike Fitness 371, these courses meet at a specific time and place and with a predetermined instructor.

“Before, you had to sign up for a structured class,” said Justin Ramsey, an instructional assistant at the LRC. “There’s a lot more flexibility now.”

Staff and community members are also encouraged to enroll and use the new facility.

“It’s a very positive environment,” said John Herlihy, another instructional assistant, “and a tremendous opportunity for students and the community.”
