Financial Aid ready for spring applications

Spring financial aid checks are sched¬uled to arrive on time, according to Catherine Fites, dean of enrollment and student services.

Students looking forward to the spring semester at City College should expect a more on-schedule disbursement of financial aid than this fall, according to campus officials. The college’s system, however, still shows the stress that comes with unusually high enrollment and student aid applications, but is diligently catching up with its workload.

“Students who register by Jan. 2 and are in good standing will receive their Pell Check the first week of the semester,” said Fites. ”Continuing student loans, not includ¬ing new applications, will be disbursed to students who registered by Jan. 2 and are in good standing on Feb. 11.”

In the final financial aid update report written Nov. 24, the department shows that it has processed 9,286 awards. Those awards, which include Pell Grants, student loans, Cal Grants and Academic Competitiveness Grants, had been held back because of the state’s ongoing budget crisis and the sheer overwhelming number of applicants this year, Fites said. The office is currently working to process files that need federal verification that were completed before Oct. 27, and student loan files completed before Nov. 1.

To prepare for the spring semester, Fites said that several process teams have been put in place to work on the various end-of-semester processes, including the review of fall grades and the course completion rate.

“I only want to thank the students for their patience,” Fites said in an interview, “and would like to encourage everyone to reg¬ister on their priority date to ensure the best selection of classes and a timely disbursement of their financial aid.”
