Gregory Kondos is a decorated local artist, but his name is most associated with the campus gallery, the Kondos Gallery. Its bare white walls wait blank with anticipation of its newest exhibit.

“That’s What I Figure” is the latest showcase running until Feb. 22 in the Kondos Gallery. At the Jan. 31 reception at the gallery, guest curator and past director of UC Davis’ Nelson Gallery Renny Pritikin pulled together four Bay Area image-makers to create a compilation of figure pieces for a City College audience. Seyed Alavi, Elisheva Biernoff, Travis Collinson, and Ed Loftus work fill the formerly empty walls of the Kondos Gallery with life.

Throughout the exhibit pieces are hung with flawless care. Art appreciators can find two massive spray painted bodies on cardboard done by Alavi, or can see a different perspective of the human body by looking into eyes Collinson has drawn in his drawing, “Gay” in purple colored pencil. Ed Loftus’ small but impacting work catches the eye because they look like photographs, but are in fact pencil drawings. All these artists are based in different cities in the Bay Area but students at City College have the convenience viewing them on campus.

The purpose of this exhibit, according to Pritikin, was to be able to showcase local art and to bring art to students that may not have had the opportunity otherwise.

Travis Collinson, 34, featured artist at the exhibit, was excited to be back to where he was born.

“I do a lot of portraiture,” said Collinson, who is showing a self- portrait along with his other figure works. “The figure gets lost within this odd universe that is landscape, but looking at it not in a broad landscape view.”
