Delta College sweeps double-header from City College softball

City College softball team played well for a few innings of the double header games against San Joaquin Delta College Mustangs April 14. Delta controlled the rest of the game and ultimately won with a final score of 3-1 the first game and 10-3 the second game, according to City College Head Coach Tim Kiernan.

The Panthers (11-23-1, 6-12 Big 8 ) led through the first three innings of game one. Delta College responded with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning to score.

Delta continued scoring with a home run in the fifth inning, and tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning to push the margin to 3-1.

In the second game of the double header, freshman pitcher Melissa Spanton stepped into the circle to pitch for City College. The first inning went quickly for Spanton, retiring all three Mustang batters.

The second inning wouldn’t prove as 1-2-3 for Spanton as the Mustangs amassed five runs on five hits.

“You’ve got to make pitches, and we’re not hitting a lot of spots,” Kiernan said. “If you don’t hit spots, you won’t win.”

City College was down 10-1 heading into the sixth inning, but was able to produce offensively enough to bring in two runs. Although the team lost both games, Kiernan said that harder work will turn the losses into wins.

“These teams have a lot of heart, they just need to work harder for the lack of talent [they
have],” Kiernan said.
