As the semester begins and the initial craziness of the first week dwindles, students who fall into their routines may notice the options for off-campus dining near City College seem slim.

For the most part, restaurants closest to campus are fast-food chains. However, there are some gems that provide healthier options, reasonable prices and will not eat up any more time than the hectic lunch and dinner rush of McDonald’s or KFC. Although fast-food joints may seem like the thrifty and quick options, they are really the unhealthy and uniformed options.

In this, the first of a weekly food review, I went to one of my favorite nearby eateries: Dad’s Kitchen on Freeport Boulevard.

I chose the special of the day, an heirloom tomato sandwich, and I upgraded from house-cut fries to house-cut Parmesan garlic fries.

The sandwich came with lightly fried, beer-battered heirloom tomatoes, cucumber and crispy onions on a bed of arugula with house remoulade served on toasted sourdough bread.

The crunch of the cucumber paired with the sweet flavor of the heirloom tomato dances around the mouth at first, then melts into the buttery arugula and beer-batter flavors. The mix of cool flavors balance to create a profile far from the heavy, greasy flavors I was avoiding, satisfying the craving for both a light meal, and the cool crisp crunch of fresh veggies on a hot day.
