Emotions ran high when staff and faculty from throughout the Los Rios Community College District recently discussed their thoughts and impressions on President Obama’s inauguration. Many of the speakers relayed the sense of excitement they had experienced firsthand at the presidential inauguration.

The event, titled Reflections From the Heart: Sharing the Experience of President Barack Obama’s Inauguration, took place Feb. 6 in the Cultural Awareness Center. An array of speakers shared stories, pictures and memories pertaining to the historical inauguration.

Kenneth Times and Adam Freas, both City College EOP&S counselors, shared photos and expressed what they saw and felt during the inaugural events in Washington, D.C.

“People did self-regulate. People were asking people if they were OK,” said Colette Harris, Cosumnes River College professor of communication studies.

The only complaints shared were related to the unsettling exit from the Capitol Mall. Many speakers were dismayed at the perceived disorganization and lack of planning.

“The exit plan left something to be desired, but other than that, it was an amazing experience,” Times said.

Each speaker emphasized how personal the ceremony felt, even if some who attended the inauguration couldn’t get close enough to the stage and only saw it on a huge screen.

“That’s our boy right there. That’s our man,” said Times, as a picture of Obama taking the oath of office flashed onto the projection screen during the discussion.
