Students and visitors who made it out to City College Sept. 11, were delighted by live music, $3 barbecue lunches and school clubs competing for their attention.
Centrally located in the quad, a nearly 12-foot banner proclaimed in all caps: “WELCOME DAY.” Music resounded across campus, in a cover of the song “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams.
A sizable crowd gathered for the contemporary melodies of the band Solsa, and at least a few among the audience were jammin’ out to the beat, notably a girl with pink hair and a dinosaur tail.
Flanked by towering red and yellow Cultural Awareness Center banners, the band also did a duet of “Treasure” by Bruno Mars.
“Makes you young again, girl!” a student in the audience called out, as the crowd overwhelmingly bestowed its favor on the performance.
The band took a break when the City College cheer, stomp and jazz dance teams took center stage. The jazz dance team, dressed in red, black and gold, went first and held up two fingers as they danced to “2 On” by Tinashe, while an impressive line gathered for the barbeque lunch.
“Rarr rarr rarr, errr!” said the star of the event, the City College Panther, referring to the fun to be had on Welcome Day, with an emphatic shake of her head. The Panther is rumored to be a close confidante of the student vice president.
The cheer dance team, dressed in white, red and gold with large hairbows, went up next, showing off their choreographed routines set to some of the latest hits.

Scott and other volunteers kept the hungry students moving in an orderly fashion. Among the crew manning the barbecue line, Latrice Cole, a student assistant involved with the Student Activities Department on campus, enthusiastically promoted Constitution Day Sept. 17, which will feature a free cake giveaway and trivia games on the Constitution.
Also competing for the attention of the student body were numerous booths encouraging signups for their clubs and causes. Christian clubs, such as Chi Alpha represented by Mahalie Oshiro, were juxtaposed with the atheist booth.
“Except for the heat, yeah, I had a fun Welcome Day,” said City College student Abraham Gamboa, representing the Gay-Straight Alliance.
Smooth jazz and a variety of other stylings kicked off the afternoon Welcome Day events with Carla Fleming and band, including their own song “Rise Again”.
There was another barbecue event at 5 p.m., where they piled it even higher as Welcome Day wound down for another semester.
Welcome Day this semester was “awesome,” according to Mika Jackson, president of the City College Feminists Club.
“There are a lot of feminists who signed up for the fun club activities,” Jackson said of her club,, which meets Thursdays at noon and are on Facebook.
It was a Welcome Day to be remembered.
