Vivid colors dance around the walls telling a story with each movement. They go from painting to painting, drawing the eyes into each one.

These artworks were showcased in the “100 Years, 100 Artists Centennial Exhibition” at City College’s Kondos Gallery. The show, which ran from Aug. 22 to Sept. 30, featured 120 artists who are still working in the arts and who attended City College over the past 100 years.

Chris Daubert, guest curator of the exhibit and chair of the City College art and art history department, described the method of choosing what art went into the show.

“We had 200 or 300 people in the pool then we said, ‘Okay, how many are still making a living or working as an artist?’” says Daubert.

“Out of that, we had 120 of them who were actually making art decades after they had graduated,” Daubert says.

The selection process for creating the show took about a year and a half.

According to Daubert, most of the works of art were on loan to the Kondos Gallery. After the show ended, the works were returned to the artists or collections they were loaned from.

“The oldest graduate that we had [in the show was] Gregory Kondos, who the gallery was named after,” says Daubert. “He graduated in the ’40s.”

City College’s art department has been around since the 1920s, according to Daubert. Over the years, the art department has gone through many changes. One of the more recent changes was the remodeling of the Fischbacher Fine Arts building.

“In 2006, there was a bond measure that was on the city ballot to improve the campus,” says Daubert. “They gave us a lot of money to rebuild a lot of the old buildings.”

The art department is one of the oldest buildings on campus. The building was built during the Great Depression.

City College’s art department has a long history and has gone through many changes over the years. Daubert says that despite the changes, some important things stay the same.

“That’s the one thing I can say about the department over and over again,” says Daubert. “Is that we have one foot in very old traditions and another foot in keeping things contemporary.”

The art department continues with a new exhibit, “100 Objects Show.”
