Shayla Merene is one of the newest members of The Express’ editorial staff, serving as editor of news and opinion.

Merene began as a reporter for The Express in fall 2020.

“I was intimated,” said Merene. “It was my first time working with a team. I’m looking forward to more opinions and profiles with the local community.”

When Merene began attending college, she planned to study business management, then pursued studies in the STEM field—science, technology, engineering and math—before finally deciding to pursue journalism.

Merene said she has always had an interest in journalism, dating back to her childhood. Merene and her friends would record videos of interviews they’d conduct in her neighborhood. Merene would ask how people felt about a car break-in and once confronted a neighbor about a statue of a slaveholder on their porch.

Switching to journalism proved easy for Merene, she said, since from a young age she had an interest and some skills for it.

“From age 9 to 12, I had so much audacity and courage to confront people,” Merene said.

In Merene’s second semester with The Express she said she feels more confident in her abilities after reporting last fall. That experience, along with encouragement from editors, has made her more comfortable with her writing abilities.

Merene said she is not nervous about being a first-time editor and looks forward to contributing to the Express as a reporter and editor.

“I just want to write good stories,” Merene said.
