Internships during college can set students on a path for career success that they might not have otherwise.

The Los Rios Community College District is hosting Internship Info Month, four weeks of district-wide events, to help students learn about and secure internships.

The event kicks off Sept. 27 and runs for a month. It will be hosted by Los Rios representatives covering topics such as work experience, how to gain hands-on skills and college credits.

Tracey Hodge, the Work Experience and Internship Program (WEXP) coordinator at City College, says that networking and making connections in students’ fields or major areas is very important for students to take away during Internship Info Month.

When the event was held last year for the first time, there was a good attendance, but not as high as organizers would have liked, she said.

“We invited 229,000 students within Los Rios District (all four campuses), so hopefully many students will respond and attend this virtual event,” she said of this year’s program.

Los Rios students face a lot of obstacles in regards to internships. Some of these obstacles are “making connections with employers and knowing where to go and how to find jobs and internships,” Hodge said. “And a lot of students lack soft skills, like communication and time management skills, so it’s important to hear from employers that these skills are needed.”

It will give students the opportunity to explore their interests and to build a professional network, according to the district’s WEXP webpage.

Twelve workshops will be hosted that help students learn the basics of how to get an internship, and how to use LinkedIn for networking and finding professional opportunities. Presenters also include representatives from the accountancy firm Clifton Larson Allen, Intel, California Department of Transportation and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District.

Monica Souza, a WEXP assistant developer, emphasized the importance of attending Internship Info Month.

“This is one of those opportunities that is specific to current students. So the opportunity is only available while you are a student,” Souza said. “And, unfortunately, a lot of students don’t even find out about this opportunity until either it’s too late and they’re not a student anymore, or they just didn’t even know about the opportunity at all throughout their college experience.”

“And so that’s why it’s really important for students to know that this is actually really a career opportunity that shouldn’t be missed,” Souza said passionately. “I think having these types of opportunities not only sheds light on the fact that there is this opportunity and there is this program going specifically for students.”

Souza knows about the value of taking an internship opportunity.

“When I was a student at American River College, I won a scholarship. And I would not have won that if I had not even applied for that scholarship,” Souza said. “I wouldn’t even have known about the scholarship if it hadn’t been for other students telling me about the scholarship. The importance of networking is so valuable and having these opportunities out to be able to advertise.”
