Candidates ran for positions on both the Student Senate as well as the Clubs and Events Board, both groups make up the Student Associated Council on campus.

According to Alexandra Diamant, secretary of public relations for the 2020-2021 academic year, before the elections candidates were required to submit a form of intent to run for office to the Student Senate. Once approved, candidates met with current City College students over Zoom to discuss upcoming plans and issues they wanted to focus on in the next academic year.

Diamant said that elections were promoted across multiple social media platforms, which encouraged students to vote online April 20–21. Final ballots were submitted through City College’s eservices portal.

Though the college has been online for the last year, Diamant said that she felt like a part of City College in a way she hadn’t experienced simply as a student. “There is nothing that has brought me more sense of place and sense of self and made me feel like such a part of campus than being on the Senate, even while we are working in this remote setting,” said Diamant. “It just really makes you feel like you’re a part of something, and that’s what I really like best.’’

Diamant was encouraged to become involved in the Student Senate February 2020 while working as a tutor in the West Sacramento Center’s Writing Center. She said that being a part of the student government allows students to gain life skills while also developing leadership and communication skills.

“My favorite part of the election process is seeing new faces who are proud to be a part of Sac City and want to represent,” Diamant said. “It expresses a lot about the human spirit and human condition, about wanting to find community.”
