Despite the despair brought on by the first attempt, Steve Martin is back as Inspector Jacques Clouseau in The Pink Panther 2.
When some of the world’s most precious items are stolen by a thief called ‘The Tornado,’ a dream team full of racist stereotypes is assembled. Among them is an intelligent British man (Alfred Molina), an Italian charmer (Andy Garcia), a Japanese man who is great with computers (Yuki Matsuzaki), and, of course, Jacques Clouseau, the French idiot.
Jean Reno reprises his role as Ponton from the first film, but Kevin Kline is nowhere to be seen as Chief Inspector Dreyfus. Instead, the role is played by billionaire actor John Cleese. While he had his fame in the days of Monty Python, Cleese plays the entire film on the same annoying note.
Emily Mortimer plays Nicole, the love interest of Clouseau. I found myself not caring about the relationship at all. The romance tries very hard to be a nice subplot, but it ends up being completely forgettable.

While this movie isn’t great, there are surprisingly consistent laughs throughout. They only come every five minutes, but they are there.
Some of the funnier ones come from the frustrations of political correctness instructor Mrs. Berenger, played hysterically by Lily Tomlin. She tries her hardest to teach Clouseau to be more respectful to women, but ends up making his sexism worse.
What I don’t understand is what this formidable amount of talent is doing in this sequel in a sad attempt at comedy. It’s co-written by Martin, but the other two writers have no previous experience in film. Director Harald Zwart’s most famous movie is Agent Cody Banks. This has to raise some questions about the cast’s self-esteem.
Molina is one of the most talented actors out there today, yet he completely humiliates himself playing this ridiculous role. I was so sad to see him do this. After all, he has been in box office gold movie Spider-Man 2, Ron Howard’s The Da Vinci Code (which also starred Jean Reno), and the lesser known The Hoax with Richard Gere. Why would he do this to himself?
While there are laughs, the plot is ridiculous, the writing is repetitive, the physical comedy is way overdone, it’s predictable, it’s completely illogical, and, in the opening credits, there’s an obvious phallic image. These movies seem to attract children, but I hope parents learned their lesson from the first one. I’d give it a C- based on the talent of the actors and the small laughs. Don’t waste your money going to a theater for The Pink Panther 2.
