    High school

    Life’s first big test

I had a pretty sheltered high school life, my life mainly consisted of what went on in campus and church even though college was something I always knew I was going to do but figured it was so far off and wasn’t something I needed to worry about right now, college wasn’t going anywhere.

But as graduation slowly crept up I attended a black college fair and decided to apply to numerous schools just to see where I got accepted to. I didn’t think too much of the applications because I never took SATs and ACTs so I just figured I’d go to a junior college then transfer, but to my surprise I got accepted into four universities on the spot but the representatives for the university I wanted to attend weren’t at the fair.

Even though I was accepted into universities I still didn’t think anything of it and didn’t put much effort into getting ready to go away to school. I still thought I was going to stay in Sacramento. But my mom convinced me to attend the new student orientation at Texas Southern University that was coming up so I could see the city before I made a decision.

I was in a bit of a culture shock when I arrived on the school campus. Going from diverse Sacramento, Calif. to predominately black 3rd Ward Houston, Tx was like going from one extreme to the next. But I liked it. I had never been around so many blacks at one time before. Seeing so many successful blacks that didn’t gain success from the stereotypical “musician” or “athlete” stigma put on blacks was amazing.

I was glad I decided to go to the orientation because had I not gone the chances of me attending the school were very slim. Since I wasn’t planning on going in the first place, actually going to the campus helped change my mind. I also realized I had a chance to go off on my own and find out who I was.

Like I said before I led a rather sheltered life growing up, and as time passed I realized I wasn’t going to be able to really grow up if I stayed home. I needed to get out of my little bubble and crawl from out of other people’s shadows to figure out what it is that I wanted to do. And I did.

I’m glad I moved away and got to experience the things I did. I may be back home now but I doubt it will be for long. I may go back to Texas, but then again I may not. Only the future and time will tell. I know I will be moving to go to another Historically Black College. Going away to school made me realize there’s so much more of life to experience outside of our daily norm. And it made me wonder, how can we truly enjoy life if we’re too afraid to go out and live it?
