The City College baseball team came back with a win on Feb 2 to split a weekend of play against Fresno City College on Feb 2 at Union Stadium.

The home field advantage is something that the Panthers had on Feb 1 for their opening season game, but that didn’t work in their favor when they lost. The next afternoon, the City College Panthers were leading the Fresno City College Rams 5-0 in the top sixth inning when Ben Brooks, the starting left-handed pitcher was hit by the baseball. A few throws later, the Rams caught up with the score 5-4.

Toward the middle of the ninth inning, when the last strike was thrown by right-handed pitcher Nate Berumen, the City College Panthers jumped at their opportunity to lead 6-4.

“We made adjustments from last night,” Brooks said after the game. “We came out ready to play.”

Teamwork is a huge thing in any sport. There is no difference in baseball.

“You have to play as a team to come back from a loss like last night,” utility player Marc Fackrell said. “It took the whole team to win this, even the team in the dugout cheering for the team on the field.”

Fresno City College has been known to be one of the best teams that City College has played, but that didn’t stop the Panthers from winning.

“Fresno City [College] is always good,” said Head Coach Derek Sullivan. “They always have been. They definitely have good pitches. It’s good to see where our weaknesses as a team are and where we need to improve when we play a good team like them.”

The Panthers will take on the Chabot College Gladiators in Hayward for their first away game on Feb 5.
