Campus fears of contracting the H1N1 virus – otherwise known as the swine flu – have been fueled by the explosion of media coverage, and City College officials confronted those fears last week by informing the student body about the virus and how to identify it.

One of the recent measures taken by City College to inform students on campus about the flu was posting informational bulletins throughout campus. The bulletins describe signs and symptoms of the virus, and what should be done should a person suspect he or she has contracted it.

According to the bulletin, signs and symptoms include: fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Touching your eyes and nose is to be avoided, stated the bulletins, as well as advice to see a doctor if you feel you are sick.

Campus television screens have also been utilized to spread this information, as well as e-mails to students.

Nursing major Heidi Hall believes that the widespread attention currently being given to the pandemic has been warranted.

“It is very likely that we will see more serious presentations of illness and some deaths as we go through this flu cycle,” Napolitano said.

The Census for Disease Control and Prevention reported that these have been 642 confirmed cases of swine flu and two deaths as of Wednesday, March 6.

However not all on campus believe the swine flu is a threat.

“Far more people die from the regular flu every year than have died so far,” anthropology major Emily Magagnosc said. “When we get up into the thousands, then I’ll start to worry.”

According to City College nurse Wendy Gomez, there have been no cases of swine flu on campus. Gomez said she is not afraid of the possibility of the swine flu hitting campus.

“Influenza in general is very common. People die of influenza all the time,” Gomez said. “This one happens to be a little more severe.”
