Following the piece: Marvel is back in 2026 with highly anticipated entertainment
It has been a little more than four years since the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of the web-slinging hero asked Dr. Strange to cast a spell that made the world forget not Spider-Man, but the person’s identity behind the mask, after being exposed in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” back in December 2021.
At that moment, the trilogy featuring Tom Holland’s version of Spider-Man seemed to have come to a close. Fortunately, just weeks before the film’s release, Marvel had already begun discussing plans to have Holland continue the character’s story with a brand-new trilogy.
However, fans would not hear any major updates for some time, as Holland took a well-deserved break from the role to focus on other projects. It wasn’t until March 2025 that Sony, the owners of the copyright to the Spider-Man character, officially announced that the fourth film — and the first Spider-Man variant to have a fourth installment — would be titled “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and would be released on Friday, July 31, 2026.
As August 1, 2025 all over social media teased that the return of Spider-Man finally arrived, August 2 brought another reveal: the first look at the new Spider-Man suit and confirmation that the film had officially entered production. The most recent update arrived in December, when it was announced that filming had wrapped and the movie had moved into post-production.
With a little over three months until the movie’s release, Marvel and Sony finally released the official trailer for the film on the morning of Wednesday, March 18, and I could hardly contain my excitement. I even had difficulty falling asleep the night before, knowing the trailer would be released the next morning. The day before the trailer’s premiere, Marvel had fans around the world share their excitement online, and for the first time ever, release small pieces of the trailer, which I intentionally avoided watching to prevent spoilers.
The trailer follows Peter Parker as he watches his former friends, Ned and MJ, move forward with their lives at MIT, while he remains in the background as Spider-Man, continuing to carry the responsibilities of being a hero. From what the trailer shows, this new trilogy appears to be taking a darker direction, as Peter now lives in a world where he is completely on his own, with no family or friends after choosing to make everyone forget who he is in order to save the world. A major change teased in the film is that Peter will step away from using his traditional web shooters and instead develop organic webbing, similar to what Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man used in the original trilogy.
There will also be multiple street-level villains appearing in the film, including Scorpion, who will finally make his full introduction after being teased back in 2017 in “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” as well as Boomerang and Tarantula from the comics. As for confirmed appearances from other Marvel characters, Jon Bernthal will reprise his role as the Punisher, while Mark Ruffalo will return as Dr. Bruce Banner, although it is still unclear whether the Hulk himself will appear in the film.
Another villain confirmed for the movie is Tombstone, who will be played by Marvin Jones III, an actor many fans recognized for portraying Tobias Whale in the live-action series “Black Lightning.” His character has not been introduced yet, but it is expected that another trailer will be released closer to the film’s premiere. The Hand, an organization of mystical ninjas, also appears to be involved in the film. I have never really gotten into the comics, so I’m still learning about who they are. There appears to be several villains featured in the movie, but the trailer only showed so little that the viewers will be shocked upon the release for what they have in store.
It has been nearly 10 years since I first became interested in seeing the newest Marvel films in theaters, and it’s exciting to see the MCU bringing back the kind of action that fans have been waiting for in the upcoming projects. A new Spider-Man film was something I personally needed, as it felt like it had been a while since we received an updated story centered around the character.
And this is only the beginning, as “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” is set to release next summer, and it has also been rumored that Insomniac Games may release “Marvel’s Spider-Man 3” in 2028, based on data leaks that surfaced years ago. Regardless, after years of waiting, Spider-Man is finally back.
