City College will present a new production Oct. 4, titled “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.” marking the first time City College’s theatre department will collaborate with the film department to use projections in the play, says Adjunct Theatre Professor Lori DeLAppe-Grondin, who has been directing plays at City College since 2007.

“We are working with the film department on our projections because there’s a lot of projections that are required for this play,” says Grondin, “…which is the first time we’ve collaborated in that manner with our film department.”

Grondin will direct the play, set to debut in Performing Arts Center Room 160.

According to Grondin, the play, which is an adaptation of the book of the same name, centers on Christopher, a young boy investigating the murder of a neighborhood pet.

For this production, Grondin says there will be a special performance of the play called a relaxed opening Saturday, Oct. 19.

“That is for people who may be sensitive to sound and lights or may feel constricted within a space of people,” says Grondin. “So we’ll bring up the house lights, we’ll dim some of the more bright effects and bring the noise down, and leave the space available for people to come and go as they need.”

Grondin says that while not stated outright in the play, the main character is written as possibly being on the spectrum or is considered high-functioning autistic.

“We’re really very excited about it because Christopher—he’s not labeled in the play—but he would be considered autisitic or at least high functioning on the spectrum,” says Grondin, “and so we are looking to make sure we are honoring anyone that really wants to come see the play and giving them the opportunity to do that.”

The play opens at City College Oct. 4 and will run through Oct. 20. Other dates for the play include Oct. 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20. Tickets to the play can be purchased online or at the PAC box office one hour before curtain starting at $18 for general admission, 10$ for students or children ages 6 – 12, and $15 for seniors, disabled and military.
