In a shutout performance March 14, the City College Panthers softball team defeated the Santa Rosa Bear Cubs 8-0.

“We played pretty well,” said head coach Tim Kiernan. “We did everything we needed to do just about.  We needed to move people over and get on (base). In the first inning we didn’t get on, (but) once we got on, we got runs in.”

The Panthers got things going early in the second inning when infielder Breanna Eastlick took first base after being hit by a pitch. Rylee Retzer followed with a single up the middle of the field. Casey Peck stepped up to the plate with two runners on base. Finding her pitch, she sent a home run over the center field wall to put the Panthers on the board 3-0.

Mackenzie Duval, City College’s Female Athlete of the Month in February, continued the momentum with a single, and a stolen base, closely beating a tag from Santa Rosa’s Jonelle Bolduc. Duval scored the Panthers’ fourth run of the inning when Shelby Lloyd doubled to left field.

Leading the Panthers’ defense, sophomore pitcher Danielle Reyes struck out two of three batters in the top of the third inning. Reyes struck out six batters in all and gave up only two hits in five innings pitched. Reyes leads the Big 8 with 80 strikeouts and is 9-3 this season.

“It was a team effort,” said Reyes,  who attributes the support of her teammates as critical to her ability to perform at such a high level. “If they make an error, they did the best they could, and they always have my back.”

Two errors by Santa Rosa’s defense helped the Panthers score two runs in the third inning, bringing the lead to 6-0.

The Panthers continued their strong batting performance in the fourth and fifth innings.

Breanna Eastlick’s sacrifice fly to right field and an infield error by the Bear Cubs allowed the Panthers’ final two runs, ending the game.

“I think we all worked as a team, hitting behind each other, getting each other over, we really did good together as a team, we’ve been struggling connecting our hits,” said Mackenzie Duval about the game.

The Panthers swept the Folsom Lake Falcons in a doubleheader March 16. The Panthers will travel for a five-game road trip before returning home March 26.
