City Theatre debuts its first spring semester production about a woman dealing with grief after the death of her sister in “She Kills Monsters: Virtual Realms” in eight online performances beginning Feb. 25.

Lori Ann DeLappe-Grondin, City College theater professor, directs the production by playwright Qui Nguyen in six livestreamed and two recorded performances Feb. 25–28 and March 4–7. Tickets for each performance are $10.

A content advisory is posted under the banner for “She Kills Monsters: Virtual Realms” on the City Theatre website, cautioning viewers that the production contains adult language exploring themes of violence, sexuality, and grief. DeLappe-Grondin hinted at the possibility that Dungeons and Dragons may be played in some form during performances.

The play is about Agnes Evans who, in an effort to process the grief of losing her teenage sister, Tilly, goes on a journey to learn about her sister by exploring notes Tilly left behind in her Dungeons and Dragons notebook. Nguyen wrote the play  in 2011 for the stage and adapted it for socially distanced live and recorded performances in 2020.

According to the City Theatre website, its production of “She Kills Monsters” has been entered in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. Students and faculty involved in the production will gain access to KCACTF scholarships, internships, grants and awards for a variety of categories involving production of the livestreamed performances.
