With five games remaining in the season, the City College men’s basketball team is looking at five teams in the Big 8 Conference as the Panthers’ playoff hopes start to fade.
The team is just 3-6 in its last nine games, are now 12-11 overall and 4-7 in the conference after being 11-6.
In a home game against Sierra College Feb. 25, the Panthers routed the Wolverines 83-57. City College fell behind 12-2 early and then went on a 22-0 run, including a 42-13 run to lead 44-25 at the end of the first half.
“We were too excited I think and we had turnovers,” said Panthers head coach Andrew Jones on the team’s early struggle. “When they (Sierra) had to go against our zone, we just didn’t let them breathe.”

The Panthers had 19 assists in the game and were able to get to the free-throw line 32 times and make 22. Conor Jeffery led the team in scoring with a season-high 29 points and made nine out of 13 shots with five 3-pointers made.
“We’ve been working harder in practice as a team,” said Jeffery. “Feels good when we come out and show it in a game—it translates, and we just need to keep the momentum going.”
The Panthers lost a close road game Jan. 29 to the Santa Rosa Bear Cubs. City College led 30-20 at the end of the first half and was outscored by 14 points in the second half, which allowed Santa Rosa to improve to 7-2 at home, winning 59-55.
City College then dropped a second straight game after losing at home 84-72 to American River College. While the game was a close first half, the Beavers were able to pull away from the Panthers in the second half. City College had five players score in double figures. The Panthers will now have to win their final five games to keep their playoff hopes alive.
