Eight members of the City men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in the CCCAA State Championship Meet May 18–19 at Bakersfield College.
Seven of the eight competitors belonged to the City women’s team, which scored 25 points and tied for eighth place overall.
The Panthers’ men’s team had just one representative: Big 8 Conference and NorCal hammer champion Trevor Holt, who placed sixth at the state finals with a toss of 50.59 meters.
A redshirt a year ago, Holt spent most of his time honing his throwing skills, said men’s head coach Rob Dewar. It was a habit that has shown to pay off handsomely for Holt.
“He just stuck with it,” said Dewar of Holt. “He just bought into what (the coaching staff) was talking about. He went through a lot these last couple years with us: health issues, transitioning from wrestling to track. Last year, he redshirted, and he was out here every day. I told him, ‘This is going to pay off next year.’ And now he understands.”
Holt won the hammer throw at four different meets this season. His longest throw of 53.81 meters earned him the title of NorCal Champion at Hughes Stadium. That distance placed him fifth overall in California and 12th in the entire nation at the community college level.
Holt became the first NorCal hammer champ from City College since Aaron Tombleson in 2012.
In the women’s 100-meter dash, Sianna Willis came within half a second of claiming the state title. She settled for second place at 12.23 seconds before taking a fifth-place finish in the 200 at 25.57.

Willis was the Conference Champion in the 100 and the NorCal Champion in the 200. Her best times in each respective event were Top 10 marks in the state and Top 40 in the country. Willis also helped pace the women’s 4×100 team to two victories this season, including the Big 8 Championship.
Willis’ relay teammates, Chidinma Nwokocha, Lauren Smith and Kiara Flenoid, ran the 4×400 at the state meet along with Daryia Greene, who typically subs in for Willis for the 4×400. After winning three straight relays, including the Conference and NorCal titles, the 4×400 team took sixth at state with a time of 3:59.98.
“We could’ve run a little faster, but we were happy to make it,” said Smith, who was the third leg in the 4×100 and the first leg in the 4×400. “Everyone pulled their weight. We worked our butts off this year. We do some of the hardest workouts. Nobody has done what we’ve done.”
Winning the conference crown in 2017, City repeated as Big 8 Champions in the 4×100 and 4×400 relays in 2018.
The Panthers also won their second consecutive open 400 championship when Greene finished ahead of everyone else at 57.18 at the Big 8 meet. Greene, who was also the NorCal 400 Champion, placed fourth at the state meet at 56.61.
Greene etched her name onto City’s all-time Top 10 list in two different events this season. Her personal best time in the women’s 400 (56.55) is the fastest City College has seen since 1995. Her 2:21.51 finish in the 800 at Sacramento State March 16 was the program’s best mark in the past 34 years.
In the women’s field events, throwers Janessa Moses and Riley Cannon have consistently placed among the top of the competition over the past month and a half. The two have been runners up to each other in the shot put leading up to the state championships with Cannon taking first at the Big 8 meet and Moses claiming the NorCal crown.
In Bakersfield, Moses placed fourth overall with a throw of 12.72 meters while Cannon took 11th with 10.69 meters. Women’s head coach Marissa Avendano said that the two have had a friendly rivalry all season long.
“They both say that they’ll be at the top of the podium,” Avendano said. “They’re both different throwers. One is quickness, the other one is power. If you execute what you have, then you’re going to win. They can go back and forth, depending on who has the better day.”
Moses and Cannon’s best marks this season placed them third and fourth, respectively, in California and 16th and 17th in the nation. The two currently rank eighth and ninth on City’s all-time shot put list.
