After strong showings at the Northern California Prelims, the City College women’s and men’s track and field teams are confident that they will find their stride in the finals before the state meet.
The women were able to duplicate their performance from the previous meet, but this time doing so at the Northern California Prelims May 4 at Hughes Stadium. The Panther women had six first-place finishes, the exact amount they had on the road two weeks ago at American River College in the Big 8 Championships.
City College freshman runner Perla Gonzalez opened the event by singing the National Anthem, and then came the start of the 4×100-meter relay.
The women in the event were Sianna Willis, Lauren Smith, Kiara Flenoid, and Chidinma Nwokocha. After finishing in 48.13 seconds last week, they were able to not only maintain first place but also finish at 47.91, a new season-best for the women this year.
“It was great,” City College women’s head coach Marissa Avendano said. “I thought we had a great meet all around, and now we get to go to finals, which was the main focus.”
Willis was able to capture first place again in the 100 prelims. She came in at 12.30 seconds after coming in at 12.10 last week. However, Willis said her goal is to run under 12 seconds in the Northern California Finals May 11.
“I probably need to prepare more, but the main thing is to keep my mind clear,” she said.
Later in the day, Willis took her third first-place finish (24.86) of the day after winning the 200-meter dash. At the Big 8 Championships, she finished fourth at 26.29 in the 200.
Before helping her team to a first-place finish in the 4×400, Daryia Greene placed the seventh fastest mark in City College history in the 400. Greene finished in first place (56.70) as she continues to cut her time down each week. She already owns the fifth fastest 400 time, which she set earlier this year.
Greene, Nwokocha, Flenoid and Smith, led the way for a first-place (4:00.02) finish in the preliminary 4×400 heat. The women took first place over Santa Rosa College for the second consecutive meet.
“I’m really excited for finals,” Greene said. Greene said she wants to get under four minutes and believes her team has a shot at doing so because of how close they are in time with Santa Rosa.

Janessa Moses (12.71 meters) and Riley Cannon (12.60 meters) took first and second place, respectively, in the shot put. The two women swapped positions from the prior meet. Last week Cannon won the Big 8 Championship in the shot put, and Moses was the runner up.
“I’m definitely happier than when I was in the beginning of the year,” Cannon said on her performance in the shot put. Cannon’s 12.83 personal best this season won her Big 8 Championship, but she said her goal in the upcoming regional finals and at the state meet is to set a new best.
The men’s 4×100 team was just able to qualify for this Friday’s NorCal final. Kamil Jones, Ibn Frazier, Torrey White, and Daryl Moppins finished sixth in 42.60 seconds. Moppins plans on improving the minor details after nearly getting his team disqualified for an early take-off during the race.
“It’s something we need to work on,” he said.
Despite the nearly costly error, Moppins is confident that his team can finish in the Top 4 and also hit the mark of 41.99 or better, a number they’ll have to reach in order to qualify for the state meet.
Along with the 4×100, Jones will also participate in the finals after a ninth place (55.27) finish in the 400 hurdles. White came in at 49.69 in the open 400, taking ninth place as well.
Big 8 Champion Trevor Holt took second place (49.12 meters) in the hammer throw, while teammate Jorgue Hernandez came in eighth place with the distance of 42.92 meters.
Holt said he wants to focus on all the techniques he’s learned and put them all together in order to bring out his best for the finals.
“I could’ve definitely done better,” he said on his performance in the prelims. “Noticing how close I am to the leading guy, it gives me some hype to push forward and succeed in (Northern California Finals) this coming week.”
Coach Rob Dewar said the competition of his athletes stood out to him and believes they will be ready for the state meet.
“I know what we can do, and I know what we’re capable of doing,” Dewar said.
City College will host the NorCal Finals at Hughes Stadium May 11.
