Thousands of screaming Sacramento Kings fans packed the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento to cheer on their favorite basketball team as they hosted the Oklahoma City Thunder. Sitting in Section 224 was the City College wrestling team.
The Panthers were special guests of the Kings during the Feb. 29 home game. The wrestling team was honored on the court for its 2015 State Championship victory. It is the Panthers’ second state title in three years. The opportunity was set up by City College wrestling coach David Pacheco and a former employee at City College, Maurice Brazelton. Brazelton is currently the in-game director for the Kings.
“I’ve known [Maurice] for a long time, and two years ago when we won, they didn’t do anything,” Pacheco said. “So I asked him, ‘What’s up with that, Mo?’ Finally about two weeks ago, he said, ‘All right, we’re going to get you out there on the 29th.”
After the first quarter ended the Panthers headed down from their seats to the arena’s tunnel that leads to the basketball court. With a little over two minutes left in the first half, a timeout was called. During the timeout the Kings’ announcer called for the City College wrestling team to join him at center court.
That’s when the thought of being in front of so many people kicked in for Dylan Forzani, but those nerves quickly went away, according to the sophomore wrestler.

The wrestlers and coaches were handed shirts and little foam basketballs to throw out to fans during the ceremony. Although the team was there to be acknowledged for its achievements, the most important thing was that the group came together outside of wrestling season, according to Pacheco.
“The bonding that went on between the guys that night might have been as good as anything they’ve ever done,” Pacheco said.
For some of the City College wrestlers like Forzani, freshman Derek Lee Loy and sophomore Christian Carbajal, it was their first time attending a Kings game. For sophomore Alex Braino it was a moment he said he will always cherish.
“I’m going to remember that for the rest of my life,” Braino said. “It’s not every day you win a state championship and you get to be recognized by an NBA team.”
