The City College men’s basketball team’s second-half comeback was not enough to lift the Panthers past the Diablo Valley College Vikings.
The Panthers squared off against the Vikings Feb. 11 in an important Big 8 Conference matchup at the North Gym. City College lost the game 56-55 and now the team must win its final two regular season games to make the postseason. However, the Panthers are no longer in the running to win the Big 8 Conference, according to City College head coach Andrew Jones.
“The loss makes it so we can’t win the league,” Jones said. “We’re still in the hunt. We still control our own destiny. If we win these last two we should be in the playoffs.”
Things did not start well for City College as the Vikings jumped out to an early 13-3 lead. The Panthers didn’t help matters much by turning the ball over and not sinking open shots. The team went nearly five minutes without scoring a single basket and found themselves down 19-12 at halftime. Jones said their inability to score in the first half was difficult to overcome.
“We only made five shots in the first half,” Jones said. “We had several shots inside that we missed and we missed open looks from outside. We didn’t make any threes in the first half.”
The second half was a complete turnaround for City College. It was Diablo Valley that was unable to make shots to start the half. The Panthers slowly started chipping away at the Vikings’ lead and with a little over a minute left in the game, freshman guard David King hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 54-54.

Diablo Valley was able to retake the lead by two, but the Panthers had the ball with 24 seconds left in the game. Sophomore guard Devin Joseph drove the ball to rim and was fouled on his layup attempt, sending him to the free-throw line with the chance to tie the game, with nine seconds left. Unfortunately, Joseph was only able to make one of his two free throws, and City College was still down 56-55.
Joseph said he felt like he let his teammates down.
“I tried to ease my thoughts, not think too much about it, and not put too much pressure on my shoulders,” Joseph said. “I missed one and I can’t do that. As a point guard and a leader of my team, I got to put both of those in.”
The Panthers have two games left, one away and one at home. Their final game of the season is at home against American River College on Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m.
