City College women’s basketball edged out a close victory Feb. 5 over the Consumnes River College Hawks.
The Panthers won their second game in a row by beating the Hawks 66-62. Things got off to a shaky start for the Panthers because of the Hawks aggressive defensive game plan, according to City College head coach Julia Allender.
“They knew what our weaknesses were and that’s handling pressure,” said Allender.
Returning for the Panthers was the team’s leading scorer, freshman guard Jessica Lauderdale. After missing two weeks because of a concussion, having Lauderdale back was a welcoming sight to Allender.
“She’s just tough, she’s gritty. She plays big at the right times,” said Allender. “She got some big rebounds, she made a few big layups, had a big three toward the end.”

In her first game back, Lauderdale registered a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Even though she missed two weeks, playing was the easy part. According to Lauderdale, she was limited to what she could do physically by an injury.
“It felt normal, just more exhausted than anything,” said Lauderdale. “I haven’t ran in over a week and a half. This is my first time coming back, and I didn’t practice a lot of up and back full court speed. So it was different.”
Lauderdale gives credit to the Panthers’ post play during the game and said what pulled the team together to get the win was just saying “next play.”
“That’s our big thing this year, just the next one,” said Lauderdale.
