A very short-handed City College picked up a victory against Modesto Junior College Pirates Feb. 2 at the North Gym. Despite only having six players available, the Panthers beat the Pirates 71-38.
The Modesto roster outnumbered the Panthers 12 to 6. City College came into the game missing one of the team’s star players, redshirt freshman guard Jessica Lauderdale. Lauderdale was unavailable because of a concussion she sustained in the team’s previous game.
Modesto started the game on fire, pushing the pace. City College coach Julia Allender settled the Panthers down and told the team not to lose its composure.
“They came to play. We just need to trust the process and play the game the way we need to play it,” Allender said. “Don’t get all ruffled because they made shots early.”
The Panthers weathered the first quarter and were able to settle into a groove defensively. The zone defense City College played forced the Pirates into tough shots. Before that, players were simply out of position, according to Allender.
With the defense clamping down and the Panthers hitting shots from beyond the arch, the team was able to head into halftime with a 10-point lead.

The second half featured more of the same. The Panthers continued to play solid defense and hit threes. City College point guard Corina Tacardon led the team in scoring with 24 points. The Panthers combined for a total of 13 3-pointers, six of which came from Tacardon.
Allender said the 13 3-pointers are a testament to the way the team has been playing all season.
“All year we’ve won because we can make shots. We shoot the ball extremely well,” Allender said.
The Panthers’ record improves to 19-6 with their win over Modesto. They currently sit two games behind Sierra College for first place in the Big 8 Conference.
The Panthers’ next home game is Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m. against Cosumnes River College.
