City College volleyball extended its conference-winning streak to three games, Oct. 21 after defeating the No. 16 Santa Rosa Junior College Bear Cubs in four sets.
The Panthers won the first set handily, outscoring Santa Rosa 25-18. However, in the second set, the Bear Cubs won 25-21, because the Panthers seemed to have lost focus, according to head coach Laurie Nash.
“We just kind of lost our minds for a moment,” Nash said. “We weren’t collecting ourselves very well and weren’t controlling the ball. We made a whole bunch of errors in a row — handling errors and passing errors. We were out of system a lot.”
The Panthers attempted to mount a comeback when Santa Rosa was up 23-18, scoring three straight points, but the deficit proved to be too much to over come.
“I think Santa Rosa just had momentum on their side at that point, and they were playing great defense and getting points offensively,” Nash said.
City College bounced back in the third set, outscoring Santa Rosa 25-14 to get the win. However, the fourth set wasn’t as lopsided a victory. The Panthers out outscored the Bear Cubs 15-8 to start the set, but later began to lose traction as Santa Rosa battled back, cutting the lead to 24-23.
The Panthers ultimately won the set, 25-23 to win the match 3-1.

Since starting the season 10-3 in non-conference matchups, the Panthers have been up and down in its first six Big 8 matches. Prior to the match, the team was .500 against conference rivals, so the small three-game streak is refreshing, according to middle hitter Madyson Taylor.
“Sometimes we get stressed out about sports and we forget to have fun, but we had so much fun. I haven’t had a game like that all season,” Taylor said.
The Panthers will try to continue their winning streak when they travel to Stockton Oct. 28 to face Delta College, and the next home game is Oct. 30 against American River College.
In each of the previous matches against Delta and ARC this season, the Panthers lost 3-0. The team will look to reverse the outcome this week
“I think we just need to keep the same rhythm up and figure out how to maintain some consistency,” said City College outside hitter Katie Haley. “We can’t be so up and down.”
