City College men’s basketball loses 13th game of season
Panthers’ offense can’t keep up in second half
City College men’s basketball dropped its sixth Big 8 Conference game this season Jan. 27 to the Sierra College Wolverines, in a 90-72 loss.
The Panthers kept the game close in the first half, but could not keep up with the Wolverines’ potent offense late in the second half and were outscored 48-31.
“I thought they got off to a quicker start than us from an effort standpoint,” said City College head coach Andrew Jones.
Despite having three players score in double figures on the night — Kellen Hill (15), Devin Joseph (11) and Adam Ciszewski (10) — the Panthers’ leading scorer on the season, Brandon Rowden, couldn’t get anything going. Rowden, who averaged 18.2 points in the previous six conference games, only scored eight on the night.
“It was the first time in a while that Brandon [Rowden] didn’t have a good game,” said Jones. “He left a lot of things out there.”
The Wolverines had five players score double figures, including leading scorers Antonio Lewis (23 points and eight rebounds), Isaiah Pineiro (17 points and eight rebounds), and Isaiah Quintero (16 points and 12 rebounds).
“It just seemed like we didn’t start off where we finished in terms of effort and in terms of focus,” said Jones. “We were just kind of out of sorts, it seemed like. I don’t really have an answer or else I would’ve done something about it.”
The Panthers’ next home game will be Feb. 3 against Modesto Junior College.

City College women’s basketball loses seventh straight game
City College women’s basketball team lost its seventh straight game Jan. 27 to the Sierra College Wolverines in a close 58-45, Big 8 Conference matchup.
Despite being down 33-13 at the half, the Panthers picked it up on both offense and defense in the second half to come back within four points. However, after a few turnovers and some intentional fouls, the difference in score went back up to double digits in the last minute.
“I think we got fatigued — mentally and physically,” said City College head coach Julia Allender. “We had that turnover by [Aleea] Reese; that half-court pass — that was tough. That’s a mental breakdown.”
Going into the second half, the Panthers began to have a more controlled offense and were more aggressive on defense, allowing for an 18-7 run in the first 10 minutes of the half. However, their late game turnovers were too much, and the Wolverines’ lead grew to 13 points in the last minute.
The Panthers’ leading scorers on the season, Rayelle Ross (14) and Aleea Reese (11), both scored in double digits, but no other players could get much going.
“I thought we played a better second half, but you can’t spot a team 20 [points] and get pushed around by them in the first half,” said Allender. “It’s like we got punched in the mouth and didn’t have an answer. It’s tough to win games that way.”
The Panthers’ next home game will be Feb. 3 against Modesto Junior College.
