City College’s softball team had an all-around dominant day Feb. 22 when the Panthers beat West Valley College and Shasta College 7-6 and 11-0, respectively.
In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, the Panthers were able to get the win with a strong hitting performance and great defensive play down the stretch.
The first inning began with a shaky start for pitcher Jordan Petersen. After Petersen gave up a two-run home run, coach Tim Kiernan brought pitcher Meghan Wantz in from the bullpen.
“[Wantz] came in and put the stop on them and won that game,” said Kiernan.
In the top of second inning, Wantz’s pitching proved to be dominant. She faced three batters and was able to strike out all three.
Center fielder Aaliyah Oliver led the team to a three-run second inning when she hit the ball to deep right field for a two-run single. Oliver also covered all of center field on defense, having run down a catch and diving for a catch to get two outs in the sixth inning.
Designated hitter Noelani Kakalia led the Panthers in hitting, having two home runs and three RBI’s. Accoriding to Kakalia, her hitting performance is a practice payoff.
“(I work) hard everyday at practice, doing extra before practice and even after practice,” said Kakalia. “I keep working at it.”
West Valley’s Vikings attempted to make a comeback in the top of the seventh inning when the team scored one run to make the score 7-6.
With two outs and two runners in scoring position, Wantz intentionally walked Vikings’ first baseman Lindsey Rafter—who hit a two-run home run in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Vikings outfielder Khailyn Neumeyer grounded out to end the inning and the game.
“We made a few mistakes in that game but I think we’re getting better,” said Kiernan. “I think we’re going to be a better team.”

In the first inning, right fielder Megan Winton—who had three hits in the game—hit an RBI single which put the score at 1-0 at the end of the inning.
With one out and the bases loaded in the second inning, first baseman Taylor Martinez hit a three-run double giving the Panthers a 5-1 lead. City College would go on to score two more runs in the inning.
Shortstop Mickey Loveridge—returning from a shoulder injury that kept her sidelined for the beginning of the season—all but ended the game in the fourth inning when she hit a two-run triple.
Pinch-hitter Lucia Lopez-Ramirez came in for catcher Allie Cheetham and hit a sacrifice fly that brought Loveridge home, bringing the score to 11-0.
The team closed the game out on a 10-run rule in the fifth inning.
Wantz had a brilliant day, getting a win in both games, bringing her record to 4-0. She had four strikeouts in the first game and pitched a shutout in the second game.
Loveridge led the team, in what was a commanding hitting performance with two RBI’s, a double, a triple, and a run scored.
“I think this team can hit,” said Kiernan. “We’ve got starters and non-starters that can hit. I mean we can really hit.”
With a great pitching performance and an outstanding hitting day, the team was satisfied with their performance.
“We played pretty well today,” said Kiernan. “We pitched pretty well, we threw strikes, we didn’t walk anybody in the second game. So I was a lot happier in how we were playing.”
