Fourth time’s a charm

Sitting back at a recent baseball game with his dark sunglasses, hiding his eyes and non-verbal reactions, he emits a feeling of seriousness. As a spectator in the stands, he is relaxed and patient; he doesn’t even flinch when the City College team hits a double and scores.

With a single glance you wouldn’t be able to tell this man is City College’s only coach to win state championships in two different sports. Tim Kiernan has won three state championships in women’s softball and one last semester in women’s golf.
The only similarities between softball and golf are the colors of the balls, showing Kiernan’s ability to coach multiple sports successfully.

“When you go to school to be a physical educator, you are trained to coach multiple sports and specialize in a sport,” Kiernan says. “I actually specialized in baseball.”

Although coaches are trained to coach multiple sports, there is a difference between coaching multiple sports and winning state championships.

But Kiernan says his coaching message has always been the same. He has always coached commitment, consistency, and most important, everything is serious business until it was over.

From coaching baseball two years at McClatchy High School to coaching softball at Rio Americano High School, from coaching as assistant basketball coach at City College to training the men’s baseball team, from coaching the women’s softball team to coaching the women’s golf team—the message has always stayed consistent.

“Throughout the season, Coach was always there to provide words of motivation. He knew what each one of us was capable of and would never let us forget it,” says Erika Salinas, City College’s Northern California women’s gold medallist in golf. “No matter how down we seemed to be, or pumped up, he would remind us of the task at hand and to stay grounded because anything could happen.”

To his players like Salinas, Kiernan wins first place both on and off the field. But Kiernan is modest and humble. He says the players he coaches are successful, but not because of him.

“I don’t think I make kids tough, I recruit kids that are tough. I recruit kids with a competitive streak,” Kiernan says. “Everyone can’t recruit. Recruiting is a game within a game. In order to be a good coach, you have to be a great recruiter.”

Kiernan’s personality and intelligence shine through when he talks about his strengths. He says when he’s recruiting, he “sells” prospective athletes on City College’s resources and the college’s dedication to academics.

But the truth is, if you’re great, Kiernan makes you better. If you’re tough, Kiernan makes you tougher.

“I will do whatever is in my power to try and get my athletes a scholarship,” Kiernan says.

As the baseball game ends and the men’s team wins, Kiernan stands up, claps his hands and smiles. It’s all business, and it’s not over until it’s finished. Just ask coach Kiernan when he’s not sitting in the stands.
