Student FYI: Week of Oct. 9 through 20

There’s so much happening at City College, The Express’ bi-weekly Student FYI series is a place for students and staff to get essential information in an informative and efficient way. We compile a brief list of all the crucial news the City College community needs to know every other week.

The City College literary journal Susurrus is now open for student and alumni submissions of artistry, including poetry, artwork, comic strips, monologues, plays and more. These creations will be sorted through and chosen by a team of student staff to be published in their Renaissance collection. The submission deadline is Oct. 31. Use this link to answer any questions you may have or to submit your work.

The City College Counseling Department is offering an opportunity for students to receive support on their educational journey through the Fresh Start Program. Students who are experiencing setbacks in their education either due to academic probation or dismissal may sign up for workshops offered by the department. These workshops are being offered from Oct. 6-27, with online and in person options. More information about how to sign up for these workshops can be found here.

City College is offering an opportunity for new and future students to attend an event called Panther POV, which will take place on Thursday, Oct. 12 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the quad. The program helps students and their families learn more about the academic programs and resources offered at City College. Campus representatives will be there with information and will be ready to answer any questions. Click the link here to learn more.

Students can vote on Measure A, which deals with supplying free transit passes to students at City College. The student special election will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 10 and Wednesday, Oct. 11. Students can vote through their eServices account. Measure A is a proposed extension of the current Universal Transit Pass program, which gives eligible students access to free Regional Transit passes. If this proposition is approved it will extend the program through Dec. 31, 2028. For more information on this matter click the link here

City College’s ASHÉ Center is hosting their first event of the semester, a peer mentor workshop called Black Music through the Years on Thursday, Oct. 12. The ASHÉ Center, which stands for African American Student Healing and Empowerment and is a Yoruba word meaning power and command, is a resource meant to enhance the educational experience for City College students of African descent. The event will be held in the Student Center, room 105, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. and will include karaoke. To pre-register for this event or any future ASHÉ Center events, visit the link here.
