“The deck gun up on top was putting out close to 1,000 gallons of water per minute,” Whang said. “The other big hose line in the back was putting out 250 gallons per minute, so we are putting out a lot of water.”

In the rear of Engine 12, Firefighter Erik Degner managed the powerful 5-inch diameter hose, shooting water across the empty parking lot.

“I was at SCC from 2006 – 2012. Initially I was pursuing English, and I wanted to go into education,” Degner said. “I worked with disabled students on campus as a scribe and a note-taker. I think I might have gone into academics if I hadn’t stumbled across this career path. Because of the Los Rios, training and EMT school, and Fire Academy, this is where I ended-up, and I’m very happy.”
