Craig Hart, who worked as a grant coordinator at City College for 15 years, has died, according to his colleagues on campus.

Hart worked in Student Services for the duration of his career at City College. His death came as a shock to his family and colleagues who remembered Hart for his interest in and dedication to his work and the college, as well as his work ethic.

Norman Lorenz, professor of early childhood education, worked with Hart for three years. He lamented the loss of a friendship that was growing stronger before the pandemic. Lorenz remembered always being able to rely on Hart to do his work and do it well.

“He was amazing with numbers and dealing with large spreadsheets,” Lorenz said. “His expertise in working with spreadsheets and Excel regarding our grants and accounting of grants was meticulous.”

Hart’s friends recalled that he loved movies, music and Ultimate Frisbee, joining the Ultimate Frisbee team that regularly played on campus.

Cynthia Giradi, an administrative assistant at City College, was Hart’s friend and colleague since 2015 and described him as an incredible athlete.

“He was part of a hardcore, competive Frisbee team,” Giradi said. “I never heard of it. Almost like a rugby thing — he was so good at it.”

Giradi remembered that Hart had a great love for almost every genre of film. Even more than a movie fan, Hart was a student of film. At the time of his death, he was 3 units away from receiving a film degree from California State University, Sacramento. He spent time working as a cameraman on video projects, using his studies as an opportunity to expand his interest and hobby.

Giriadi said Hart had no plans to make a career with his degree but still wanted to learn more about film. He did video for projects in Davis.

“He liked anything at the Tower Theater,” said Giradi. “His favorite movies would often obscure films with edgy tone. He liked everything in general when it came to movies, except he would never watch a romantic comedy.”

But his colleagues will miss him for other reasons.

“Many of his colleagues also would describe his work as invaluable. He was really invaluable to City,” Giardi said. “It’s going to be hard to replace him.”

Hart’s cause of death was not stated. He is survived by his mother, father, brother, and stepbrother.
