Amaya Torres, who has worked as a staff writer for the Express for two semesters, will serve as the Features Editor of City College’s online news site for spring 2021.

Torres joined the Express fall 2019, yet became discouraged with one of the articles she was assigned and dropped the class halfway through the semester—but the writing itch didn’t leave her.

“I couldn’t stop thinking about the Express. I wanted to write,” she said. “That’s always what I wanted to do. I came back the next semester, and I was determined.”

Her resolve ignited, Torres set out to once again mobilize her lifelong dreams of writing professionally and develop her skills by working for the Express.

Indeed, Torres acknowledges her time on the Express as the reason for much of her growth as a writer and professional.

“The Express helped with professionalism,” she said. “I’ve gotten a lot of experience in my field.”

Torres also credits Jan Haag, words adviser for The Express, with helping her grow as a writer.

In her free time, Torres writes pieces and posts them on her travel blog, channeling her curiosity.

“I’ve always loved asking questions about the world,” she said. “I could spend the rest of my life chasing answers.”

After this, her last semester at City College, Torres plans to transfer to a CSU for the fall 2021 semester and major in journalism.

Her long-term goals include writing features for magazines and supporting herself through her travel blog.

“I have really big goals of hopefully getting my blog off the ground and potentially working for myself,” she said. “Magazines and blogging is where I see myself in the future.”
