Eight months into district-wide campus closures, the City College quad remains silent and empty. There are no students, no professors and very little foot traffic throughout the day.

Although City College campus is closed, head of maintenance Greg Miller and his crew are on site as early as 6 a.m. Monday through Saturday keeping things safe and clean. Many times, maintenance crew members arrive on campus before sunrise.

“Sometimes I get surprised. We have less security right now. In the first part of the morning it can be a little sketchy,” said Miller. “I have the dog walkers and early morning joggers. Then, I have a few homeless residents who will be sitting at a table in the dark while I am walking around.”

The maintenance crew consists of Miller and four other workers. The crew has continued operating on campus throughout the closure issued March 12 to maintain the grounds. Due to COVID-19, the Center for Disease Control recommends maintaining a consistent distance of 6 feet between individuals at all times. According to Miller, additional restrictions are in place to keep the team distanced from one another when they are working. They have split the work up and currently only have one man working at a time

Miller said he was at work when the closure was announced. He said his supervisor called him and told him to go home. Miller would soon learn that he and his crew would be transitioning into a new schedule due to the campus closure. “We all chose a different day of the week so there would be minimal coverage with no co-worker contact. Masks were mandatory,” Miller said. “After a couple of months of this, we were authorized to work two more days per month, each.”

As of this writing, each crew member is working 2 days one week and 1 day the next week, then alternating between the crew members. The crew’s wages are unaffected by the reduced schedule.

“We are getting paid through LRCCD Facilities Maintenance, not City College,” Miller said. “We are still getting full pay, as we are ‘on call’ during normal hours the rest of the week. We’re still not allowed to work on the same day.”

Miller said the crew members love their job. Each has special interests throughout the campus, and know more about the school’s landscape than anyone would expect.

“After COVID, we had to cut some corners. We stopped fertilizing because that means a lot more labor,” Miller said. “I started cutting the lawn taller to conserve water, seeing as we would only be there once a week [to mow].”

Miller said he isn’t built for work in an office. He said most of the maintenance crew, himself included, enjoy working outside and spend their time away from work enjoying the open air.

“Our job is about being outside, running through the changing seasons, said Miller. “Most of the guys I work with are similar. In our private lives we spend a lot of time outdoors—hiking, biking you name it. It is a way for us to keep fit and we are all passionate about caring for the plants and making things look as beautiful as possible.”
