City College has been recently awarded a five-year, $2.9 million federal grant to support its work as a Hispanic Serving Institution.

According to City College public information officer Kaitlyn Collignon, the grant will fund a program that allows local Latinx high school students to enroll in college-level courses and simultaneously earn both college and high school credits. Students will be able to earn an associate degree or certificate and be prepared for employment or transfer to a four-year college upon graduating from high school.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for our community,” said Sandra Guzmán, coordinator of the Puente Program. “We’re providing students access to higher education at an early age where they are more likely to succeed after high school.”

City College has been a Hispanic Serving Institution since September 2015. The Department of Education defines an HSI as any institution of higher education with an enrollment of undergraduate full-time equivalent students that is at least 25% Hispanic. City College’s Latinx population is 33%, representing the largest racial/ethnic group on campus.

“Because the program is new, there is going to be a lot that needs figuring out,” according to Guzmán. “Who will create the program, what high schools will be included, and what courses will be offered are all questions that will be answered after it gets developed.

“That’s the exciting part to me—to see what that might look like for whoever gets to create [the program],” said Guzmán.
