Deskaeh “Bomber” Bomberry, the current baseball pitching coach at City College, never imagined that he’d also coach golf, but he has been named the Panthers’ women’s golf coach.

“A situation arose where the former golf coach [Tim Kiernan] had a couple of different jobs,” said Bomberry. “With everything going on with [COVID-19], along with being a part-time instructor, as far as trying to maintain a golf program, it would be pretty difficult [for Kiernan to coach both teams].”

Bomberry said his experience he has gained playing golf since he turned 18 will help the team and added that he will use many skills he learned coaching baseball in his new position. “I’m not going to act like I’m some kind of golf swing guru, because I’m not,” he said. “I do know how to organize a practice, and I do know how to help people improve themselves.”

Bomberry began his City College career as a part-time instructor and part-time baseball pitching coach in 1998. He’ll continue to coach the baseball team, making him and swimming and diving/water polo coach Steve Hanson the only coaches coaching two sports on campus.

According to Bomberry, being able to communicate with players so that they understand that he is working on behalf of their success is one of the biggest joys of coaching.

“I think the best part is helping people become better in whatever they are trying to become better at,” said Bomberry. “To know you might have had some role in that is a very rewarding feeling. The scoreboard on the field is important, but the scoreboard of how many people you’ve helped is in my mind a lot more important.”

Along with personal skills he plans to translate from baseball to golf, Bomberry said he hopes to share his experience playing golf with his athletes.

“A big part of being a successful coach is being organized and also having a plan in place that you believe in,” said Bomberry.

The women’s golf season traditionally takes place in the fall but, like all other City College athletic teams, has been postponed till spring 2021. Bomberry said that delay means that he will have to work hard to find women who want to play golf.

“In the back of my head, I am a little bit concerned that there might not be an actual golf season, but my plan is to prepare,” said Bomberry. “When we get the green light, we can start practice.”
