Like the rustling of wind through the trees, Susurrus is breezing up again for the fall 2019 semester after a one-year hiatus.

Susurrus is City College’s literary journal, comprised of written work and visual arts from current and former City College students. But the course was canceled for the past two semesters due to lack of enrollment, according to English Professor Marci Selva, who is hoping to have enough students enrolled to publish the annual journal next spring.

The class is divided between two semesters, ENGCW 450, offered each fall, and ENGCW 451, offered each spring. Advised by Selva, the journal accepts fiction, poetry, non-fiction and other forms of creative writing, as well as drawings, photography and other visual art forms.

“This is a fun – and challenging – class,” says Selva. “It is very unlike a traditional class in that there are no tests or essays, and a significant portion of what students do is reading and discussing submissions.”

Students will spend the first semester reading, discussing and voting on the submissions. The following semester is spent voting on the visual arts submissions and designing the journal.

“We start with nothing but fliers and announcements saying, ‘Please submit to our journal!’” says Selva, “and end with a beautiful, professional-quality book.”

No prior experience is needed to join the class, but it is recommended that students have strong reading and writing abilities. At the end of the class, a showcase and reading of the journal is held on campus where contributors get the opportunity to read or show their work.

“It’s an intense, time-consuming process,” says Selva, “but all the hard work is worth it, and the end-of-year reading/showcase is always outstanding.”

The Susurrus class meets Monday and Wednesday from 1:30-2:50 p.m. in the Student Services building in room 214.
