City College Associated Student Government representatives introduced themselves to the student body Feb. 18 at an open discussion to give the students they represent an opportunity to voice their questions and concerns.

Though rowdy at times, the noontime discussion revealed what the nearly 100 students who attended were concerned about. How can a student get help with money for school and books if they don’t qualify for financial aid? What is being done to address smoking on campus? These were just a few of the questions discussed.

“The questions raised actually had some impact on me,” said City College student Nick Arora.

Throughout the discussion, the audience was quite raucous and needed numerous reminders of the event’s serious nature. On top of this, flocks of people frequently wandered in and out of the Student Center during the forum, in eager anticipation of the event’s free meal.

“This is Black History Month and I do believe that we can show each other some respect, and if you don’t like what we are trying to do for you guys for free, you can bounce,” ASG Student Affairs Commissioner Elikah Bernard said to the noisy assembly.

One question asked: How are ASG members elected into office?

However, not all students in attendance were completely satisfied by the event.

“I don’t think it was structured very well,” said student Jeanette Hernandez.

“Everyone kept coming in, not knowing what was going on.”

According to ASG Secretary Steve Macias, these errors couldn’t be helped.

“We’re trying to get everything together at once and sometimes it doesn’t click the way it’s supposed to be,” Macias said.

ASG President La Toya Daniels believed that even though there were some minor hiccups during the discussion, the event went well.

“We got people here, and that’s what we’re trying to do,” Daniels said. “We got people to stay for an hour, so I guess it was successful.”
