More than two-thirds of all registered nurses in California are produced by the community college system.  A campaign called Careers of Distinction now seeks to increase funding for City College’s 100-year-old nursing program through a series of philanthropic donations.

The Careers of Distinction campaign has been quietly helping to fund programs at all four Los Rios campuses for the past five years. At each campus a notable field of instruction was selected: at Cosumnes River College, the School of Architecture; at American River College, the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management program; and at Folsom Lake College, the Visual and Performing Arts Center.

“We looked to see where we had a program that was excellent, had high student demand, where the community needed the students who graduated, and where we felt there was enough public interest that people would feel compelled to help us raise money,” says Sandy Kirschenmann, vice chancellor of Resource Development and Planning for the Los Rios district.

The reason the program is only now being given the spotlight is that it has just reached 51 percent of its total fundraising goal across the board, according to Kirschenmann.

“Until you reach 50 percent you are in a silent phase of campaigning,” Kirschenmann said.  “The people who can donate more tend to want to be the first into this sort of campaign.”

City College’s nursing program is well ahead of that average. In fact, according to Mary Turner, dean of City College’s Science and Allied Health Division Office, it’s currently closing on 83 percent of the total $7 million goal. These contributions have helped to triple City College’s output of nurses, the majority of whom have passed their licensing exams.

Funding from Careers of Distinction won’t go solely toward increasing enrollment. According to Turner, a portion of the funds will be used for replacing outdated mannequins that allow students to practice such tasks as caring for a patient suffering a heart attack or delivering a baby.

“It’s critical to us, in these times of difficult state funding, to be able to maintain our level of instruction, which provides the students with the technology that they’re going to deal with in the workforce,” Turner said.

The prospect of new medical equipment has some nursing students looking forward to the future.
“I think it would be great,” said nursing major Sarah Estes. “Some of the stuff we use is pretty outdated. If you’re practicing with outdated tools, when you get to the hospital, it’s going to be different.”
