The Express is your paper.

Due to the tragic events that transpired on campus earlier this month, I was unable to speak on this important fact in our first issue.

According to our City College website, our college serves 24,242 students and operates with more than 800 employees.

Our students in the City College journalism program will produce six, tangible, newspapers this semester that directly cater to this audience of more than 25,000.

The Express is your paper.

Like many others here on campus, I lead a double life. When I’m not grinding classes toward my bachelor’s degree, I masquerade as a digital advertising and social media specialist to pay my family’s bills.

Due to the difficulty of reporting on a national media story, I rearranged my schedule during a crucial time at my job to the small detriment of my department’s effectiveness. And I’m so glad I did.

I was so proud of our staff’s efforts in our first issue (which, if you haven’t read, immediately drop this issue and remedy at once) that I brought a copy to my boss as a sort of vindication that the sacrifice I made at work was toward some nobler purpose than spamming businesses’ emails with marketing copy.

She read it and said, “This is great work, Jonathan. But are they paying you for this?”

No, they are not. My only compensation is personal skill building and community engagement.

The Express is your paper.

I am here to serve you. And I only ask one thing in return: Engage.

Read our paper. Visit our website (saccityexpress.com). Follow us on Twitter (@saccityexpress). And most important of all, engage us when we publish something that stirs your emotions and scratches your brain.

To be honest, I would rather not write editorials. I want this space, just behind the cover, in the next four issues, to be an open forum for those who read our words and felt moved enough to comment.

You are my boss. Write to me and hold me accountable. If you feel our coverage on a particular story was too thin or if our angle was too narrow, please write to me.

If something happens or will happen on campus that’s important to you, and our staff of 17 students misses it, please write to me.

If we get something just plain wrong, please write to me.

The Express is your paper.

Everyone I’ve met on campus leads a dual life. My professors are amazing people who choose to spend a good portion of their day passing on the knowledge gleaned from their experiences to me. I’m sure yours are, too. Please write to me about them.

I have counselors on campus who have opened my eyes to new ways of looking at terrible situations and have guided my hand in making choices that lead toward daylight. Please write to me about yours.

If you haven’t noticed already, our college is a unique nexus for a variety of cultures and ideas. We are the most diverse campus in the most diverse city in the nation. The fountain of new trends and interactions bursting in our quad alone is breathtaking to witness if you just take a moment. Scenes such as:

  • Two police cruisers, parked in defensive formation, just outside Rodda North, and their officers thoroughly enjoying an impressive display of skateboard dexterity by students next to the fountain.
  • Sacramento’s upper class, adorned in cocktail dresses and $200 shoes, exchanging perspectives on space and color with first-year photography students as they leave the Kondos Gallery.
  • Anti-abortion rhetoric by special interest representatives being challenged and supported by a variety of students swirling in different paths toward class, some students participating while others eat free churros.
  • Our college president tearing up before a classroom of 17 aspiring journalists out of her pride in the campus unity displayed during one of the most difficult events in campus history.

To all of them and you:
