Feb.1 was opening night for City College Panthers baseball. It was not a beginning the Panthers were hoping for as they lost 6-1 against rival Fresno City College, giving up 10 hits over the nine-inning contest at their home field of Union Stadium.

“Fresno is always good,” said Panthers Head Coach Derek Sullivan. “[There’s] a lot of respect between the two teams, because you have to bring your A-game and we didn’t.”

Shouts of “win the battle” came from the home team’s stands and dugouts, but it was the Fresno City College Rams who won.

“There wasn’t a lot of experience [in the team] out there,” said Assistant Coach Deskaheh Bomberry.

The Panthers fielded a less experienced team as the entire outfield was made up of freshmen. First baseman Orlando Ortiz and third baseman Jerrod Bravo were seeing their first action, having missed last year with injury.

Ortiz did score the Panthers’ lone run in the bottom of the second, as he was driven in by a double by the designated hitter Manuia Fruean.

The Panthers struggled on offense and defense on the cold February night. The pitching walked eight players. According to Sullivan, that allowed Fresno to manufacture some runs. On offense the Panthers struggled and were only able to get four walks and left six men on base.
