Emma takes you back in time

As I entered Sacramento’s Lutheran Church of the Master on Saturday to catch a theatrical version of “Emma”, a novel by Jane Austin, I didn’t know what to expect. I have seen musicals before, such as “The Color Purple” on Broadway and  I must admit I was taken aback at first glance at how small and simple the venue at the Cherry Top Theater actually was.
I was anticipating a more well-designed place, however I quickly realized that it is a Lutheran Church, after all. I approached the actual stage where there were young women and men stirring about, dressed in garments that resembled the mid 1800’s.
Authentic Victorian styled dresses were flowing about with striking handmade ruffles, and a graceful way; instantly I was intrigued.  From the long beautiful curly locks in the girls hair to the elegant top hats and timeless boots worn by the men, it is safe to say that the wardrobe and stage set up  made me feel like talking with a British accent.
I imagined myself entering the home of Emma: fireplace burning, tall mahogany cabinets and Queen Elizabeth style chairs for my eye’s delight.  Lights, Camera, Action.  It was time for Emma to commence.
Emma, is centered around a young girl yearning for love, but too proud to admit it.  She is beautiful, smart, witty, and privileged and spent most of her time obsessed with living out her true desires of love through that of her best friend, Harriet.
Harriet was introduced to the elite society through Emma, whom she admired and looked up to immensely.  When Emma mistook one man’s love for Harriet instead of herself she created a world wind of mishaps and misunderstandings.

While ladies and gents were falling in love and getting married, Emma was busy indirectly advising Harriet whom to love, Mr. Knightly, a handsome honorable man whom Emma had known her entire life; a man that secretly desired Emma herself.

This tale of true love and desire far outweighed  the small and homely venue and small crowd.  Surprisingly captivated, I was eager to discover how Emma’s own life would end up.
The Director did an awesome job at keeping me hanging on to the hope that Emma would one day find what she was searching for throughout the play, true and undying love.

Emma was performed by The Cherry Top Theater at the Lutheran Church of the Master Jan. 27-28.
